It is merely towards the end that it actually starts to break apart, nevertheless smack-right up finale rescues they about ‘red’. Ingeniously staged and intelligently dialogued, it’ll have no higher difficulty when you look at the traditions down their incredibly unsightly identity.» [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Movie Bulletin said «The movie motions during the a fast pace, the brand new talk is actually advanced and you may characterisations basically effective. Richard Brody regarding This new Yorker listed «It terse and you will taut flick noir are considering the newest personal and you may professional conflicts of your identity profile, the newest criminal genius (played of the Penis Powell) behind a chic illegal local casino. The new film’s author and you may director, Robert Rossen, creates a multidimensional chess games, for mortal limits, ranging from Johnny, his manager (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s spouse (Ellen Drew), a beneficial cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can a good scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever brother (Nina Foch) has worked at casino and old a great corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The fresh new caustically epigrammatic script, the fresh cast’s suavely regulated body language regarding love and threat, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you can stylishly cocky photo (including his political conscience) get this pugnacious but really detail by detail spectacle a hidden antique of style.» [ ten ]

Whilst spot comes after a common trend, brand new characterizations are fresh plus the shows suitable in order to overbalance. Dialogue is terse and topical, steering clear of the sentimental, phoney touch. Strange camera basics arrive occasionally to escalate focus and you may momentarily stop the attention. Its generally an issue of watching Mr. Powell read his paces fashionably while an enormous throw away from actors and you will stars offer your typical assistance. Evelyn Keyes plays the good nothing lady whom brings forth the latest finest in your and Ellen Drew ‘s the easy and slinky vixen exactly who will get him to the jams. Thomas Gomez was oily once the villain and Lee J. Cobb really does a new in a position trip due to the fact a tired police inspector exactly who eventually shuts the fact. A great deal of sipping and you can smoking is completed by every worried.» [ twelve ]
